Three separate Omniums are held for the racing periods of April/May, June/July, and August/September for category A, B, C, and Junior races. Racers can earn Omnium points by placing in the top five spots in each race throughout the season.
Racers in categories B and C who place first in their respective category in the Omnium are upgraded to the next category for subsequent races. Omnium upgrades for racers in the Junior category are done at the discretion of the race officials. Omnium points are awarded as follows:
| 1st place | 7 points |
| 2nd place | 5 points |
| 3rd place | 3 points |
| 4th place | 2 points |
| 5th place | 1 point |
The top five racers who earn points in a Point-a-Lap race, Snowball, Points Race or any other race in which points are awarded will have their final standings converted into the Omnium standings. Earning 25 points in a Points Race does not mean that you will earn 25 points in the Omnium for that same race.
Tuesday night races are informal, friendly, yet
very competitive races coordinated by the San Diego Velodrome
Association.
Tuesday nights are intended to provide riders of all
ability levels with the opportunity to learn more about the many
types of track races that exist, by actually participating in them.
In addition, participants develop the more advanced skills and
fitness levels that can only be achieved through competition.
Although informal, fun, and friendly, the events are structured and run by credentialed officials, thereby providing for a safe and educational environment. It is the perfect way for everyone to learn the real rules so that they can race safely at other tracks.
Races occur every Tuesday night between April and October (see the calendar for exact dates). Registration begins around 5:30 PM and ends around 6:15 PM. You can also register online to save time. Fees are $5 for SDVA members and $10 for everyone else. Spectators are free. The first event, usually a motor paced warm up with competitive finish, begins at 6:30 PM.
Riders do not have to be licensed to participate, although it is strongly encouraged, so that they can take advantage of the many benefits of being licensed. A rider may establish credentials to participate in one of 3 ways:
Successfully complete the rider education course offered by the SDVA
Present verifiable race results from other track venues
Have a coach vouch for them
Racers are grouped according to skill and experience. Entry level participants race in the “C” group. Intermediate participants, those who have some experience but are not at the top level of ability, race in the “B” group. Advanced participants race in the “A” group. In San Diego, on any given night, it is possible to see local former Pro’s, Olympians, World, National, and State champions in action. So you need to have your legs under you if you want to jump in with the big dogs. The A-races are usually fast and furious.
In each race, points are awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place finish results. These are tracked weekly and added. Every two months the point totals are examined. The top 5 finishers in these tally’s are moved up into the next more experienced group, making room for other less accomplished riders to improve and move up as well. So you need not worry about sandbaggers stealing all the fun and glory.
The SDVA is blessed with a number of generous sponsors who keep prizes for primes in good supply. To keep the racing fast and interesting, prime laps are called often and the races for the prize keep the fans on the edge of their seats. These coveted prizes are typically socks, water bottles, tubes, handle bar tape, energy bars, and bags of coffee.
Tuesday Night Races has become an institution over the years, and they attract surprisingly large groups of fans. Spouses and kids are there to cheer for racing Moms or Dads, significant others come to cheer for their girlfriends and boyfriends, and lots of just plane fans show up to watch their favorite local racers in action. All of this, while they enjoy snacks, food and drink purchased from the concession stand.
Everyone is invited to check out the excitement every Tuesday Night at the San Diego Velodrome.
